About Oliver Wight

The Innovator Who Started It All

Oliver Wight’s ideas have shaped how organizations around the world plan, execute, and perform. But who was the man behind the methodology that changed everything?

Our History

A Vision That Redefined How Companies Run

As a leader in manufacturing, Oliver Wight saw a clear divide in how companies operated. A few leading-edge companies had a disciplined, forward-looking approach. Planning was a shared responsibility, with people across the business contributing to a single, connected plan and working together to execute it.

Other organizations were stuck in reaction mode, constantly responding to the next disruption or crisis. Over time, this cycle of firefighting eroded customer service, reduced productivity, and blurred accountability. Without realistic, aligned plans, performance became subjective, and teams defaulted to blame rather than improvement.

Closing the Gap Between Outstanding and Underperforming

Oliver Wight formed the Oliver Wight Company in 1969 as a business improvement consultancy. A year later, he asked Walter Goddard to join and focus on supply chain education and leading-edge practices in materials management. Their mission was simple but ambitious: To help executives manage their business more professionally.

From the beginning, their focus was uncompromising — only practical, proven approaches that generated significant results. Success wasn’t defined by theory or attendance, but by whether clients achieved Class A performance.

As results spread, so did demand. In 1979, a team of seasoned executives were invited to form the Oliver Wight Education Associates to scale the impact. The differentiator that is still in place today is that Oliver Wight Business Advisors must have direct experience with the Oliver Wight methodology to guide businesses to the best results.

Oliver Wight’s influence did not end with his death in 1983. Through his teachings, writing, and speaking, he empowered thousands of leaders to rethink how businesses operate. Today, many of those principles underpin modern planning and execution.
