Oliver Wight Americas, Inc. announces a new educational offering for the government sector – Mission and Operations Planning (M&OP).

NEW LONDON, NH – August 26, 2011

Oliver Wight announces adapting best-practice Integrated Business Planning principles for the government and not-for-profit sectors. This integrated planning process for the government sector and other not-for-profit agencies is called Mission and Operations Planning.

Mission and Operations Planning is a process that is utilized by management to achieve tangible results in improving reliable execution, improving credibility with oversight and budgeting control, and gaining the ability to objectively measure operational and financial performance. Oliver Wight understands that an effective M&OP process, including a culture of collaboration, is accomplished through a balance of people, processes, and tools and is expert in transferring knowledge in each of these areas.

"I coined the phrase 'Mission and Operations Planning' to address the specific needs of the government/not-for-profit sector. M&OP has its roots in the previously proven methodology of Sales and Operations Planning, but is adapted to the highly regulated and controlled needs of government agencies who have no profit motive," said Oliver Wight Principal Rick Burris.

M&OP is:

  • A process led by senior management in government that evaluates and revises time-phased projections for mission parameters, funding sources, demand, supply, product and portfolio changes, strategic projects, and the resulting financial plans. This is done at the aggregate level on a monthly basis, typically over a 24-month, or longer, rolling planning horizon.
  • A decision-making process that realigns the tactical plans for all mission functions in all geographies to support the agency's strategies, goals, and targets.
  • A consensus for committing to a single operating plan to which executives of the management team hold themselves accountable and allocate the critical resources of people, equipment, materials, time, and money to meet mission objectives.

Leadership team members of government agencies or not-for-profit organizations who are involved in planning processes or forecasting demand should attend this course: Mission and Operations Planning Course.
